Learn the ABCs of CCRCs: Understanding Life-Care Communities

When it comes to senior living, there are many acronyms thrown around – CCRC, SNF, AL, IL. It can be hard to keep track of what they all mean! A CCRC, also known as a continuing care retirement community, is a place where people can have access to multiple levels of care all on one campus. Sometimes CCRCs are referred to as life-care communities. Keep reading to learn the ABCs of CCRCs.

How are CCRCs different?

CCRCs are different because they meet the evolving needs of their residents. Instead of offering just one type of care, they serve most of the healthcare needs that arise as people grow older. People typically move into CCRCs when they are healthy and independent knowing that, should the need arise, care will be available on campus. This means that residents will be able to live in the same community as their needs change, which provides peace of mind for the future.

What types of care are offered?

CCRCs typically offer four different types of care or living accommodations:

  • Independent Living (IL) – This is for people who would otherwise be living independently in a private home. Independently living is like an apartment complex focused on the needs and preferences of seniors.
  • Assisted Living (AL) – Similar to independent living, assisted living offers apartment-style living for seniors with an added level of care. These care services range from medication management and help with personal care to housekeeping and laundry services.
  • Skilled Nursing (SNF) – Skilled nursing provides around-the-clock nursing care and rehabilitation therapy services. Sometimes people need the services of a SNF temporarily after an illness, injury or surgery. Other times, people are residents of a SNF if their care needs cannot be met in a lower level of care.
  • Memory Care – Memory care is a special type of care for people with Alzheimer’s disease or other types of dementia. Memory care is provided in a community that is designed to be a safe and supportive environment that meets the individual needs of the residents.

What are the benefits of living in a CCRC?

We never know what the future holds. Simply put, the biggest benefit of living in a CCRC is peace of mind. When you move into a CCRC, you’re typically guaranteed access to unlimited care for the entire time that you’re a resident. That means that you’ll never have to wonder where or how you’ll receive the care you need. Your entry fee will be locked in when you sign up. Like any other housing or apartment community, there may be yearly rate increases that reflect inflation and allow the CCRC to maintain high-quality services and amenities.
