Experience the Joys and Benefits of an Outdoor Lifestyle This Summer

Long, sunny summer days invite us outdoors to enjoy all the beauty of the natural world, whether it’s strolling on the beach, going for a sail, exploring a wooded trail, or simply enjoying a sunset meal with friends. Time spent in nature can refresh our spirits and help us feel more connected to the world around us. It also provides meaningful physical, emotional and mental health benefits.

The Benefits of Sunlight and Vitamin D

Wearing sunscreen when we head outdoors to prevent sunburn and reduce the risk of skin cancer is always good practice. But, according to an article published in Healthline, we do need some sun exposure. Just 5-15 minutes of sun exposure 2-3 times a week is usually enough to help your body produce the levels of vitamin D you need to boost bone health and immune function. Exposure to sunlight can also regulate your circadian rhythm, helping to improve your sleep quality.

Exposure to Green Spaces Can Improve Physical and Mental Health

Multiple studies have shown that being in green spaces can have many benefits for your overall physical and mental health. Just 20 minutes spent in a natural environment can significantly reduce cortisol, the stress hormone. When your stress levels are lower, your heart rate and blood pressure can also be reduced. Beyond the physiological benefits, people who exercise outdoors tend to have a more positive experience, which can help them stay motivated to stick to a fitness routine.

Immersing yourself in nature can also have a powerful impact on your emotional well-being, reducing the symptoms of anxiety and depression. These benefits may be linked to changes in brain activity in the prefrontal cortex, the area of the brain where emotions are regulated. Researchers have seen that people who spend five or more hours outside on weekends tend to have a lower risk of mild depression than people who spend less than 30 minutes outdoors.

Enjoy the Great Outdoors Safely This Summer

Spending time outdoors offers many benefits, but older adults should take extra precautions to stay safe during the summer months. As we age, our bodies become less efficient at regulating temperature and responding to heat, and many chronic health conditions and common medications can also impact sweat and hydration.

According to an article published by Brown University, there are steps seniors can take to enjoy nature safely this summer, including:

  • Drinking water throughout the day, even if you don’t feel thirsty
  • Eating fruits and vegetables high in water content, like watermelon, cantaloupe, citrus fruits, cucumbers, tomatoes and celery
  • Scheduling outdoor activities in the early morning hours when the heat is not as intense
  • Wearing breathable, lightweight, loose-fitting clothing
  • Limiting alcohol and caffeine as they can cause dehydration
  • Knowing the signs of heat exhaustion. If you are experiencing nausea, muscle cramps, dizziness, headaches or cold, clammy skin, get into an air-conditioned space immediately, and seek help if conditions persist.

By taking a few extra precautions, older adults can continue embracing the many benefits and pleasures of an outdoor lifestyle this summer.
