School supplies are filling the shelves at stores across the country, kids are excitedly picking out their new backpacks, and teachers are preparing their classrooms for another year of learning. While learning is often associated with childhood or early adulthood, curiosity doesn’t retire. Every stage of life offers new opportunities to grow, discover, and challenge ourselves — and those experiences are key for healthy aging.
In fact, lifelong learning plays an important role in healthy aging. According to the CDC, cognitive stimulation in seniors is best achieved by combining physical exercises that increase blood flow to the brain with mental activities that build neuroplasticity. Neuroplasticity is your brain’s ability to absorb information and evolve to manage new challenges. Together, these kinds of activities can help maintain memory, delay cognitive decline, and improve overall brain health.
“People need to understand that they have some ability to influence their brain health,” said Alan Gow, PhD, a psychology professor at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, Scotland, who studies healthy aging. “There are changes in lifestyle we can make at all stages of life that can affect cognition later in life.”
Stepping Into A New Chapter of Growth and Discovery
At Ginger Cove, we believe retirement isn’t about slowing down or stepping back — it’s about embracing one of life’s most meaningful chapters. It’s a time to pursue long-held interests, discover new passions and continue growing in mind, body and spirit. Whether someone chooses to remain in the home they love as a member of Ginger Cove at Home or embrace life on our waterfront campus, we believe lifelong learning, wellness, and meaningful connections are essential to healthy aging. Lifelong learning is woven into the active, connected lifestyle our residents and members enjoy every day, helping them stay engaged, purposeful, and connected to the people and experiences that matter most.
Mastering Technology
Technology helps us stay connected, continue learning, and maintain our independence —but it can also feel overwhelming as it changes so quickly. From staying in touch with family to managing health information, reading books, or exploring new interests, technology has become an important part of everyday life. At the same time, learning new devices and staying safe online can present new challenges. That’s why we offer twice-monthly Tech@Home classes to help residents and Ginger Cove at Home members learn about topics like smartphone settings and accessibility features, FaceTime and Zoom, AI tools like ChatGPT and how to safely manage passwords and avoid online scams. In addition to classes, residents can also receive one-on-one technology assistance through our dedicated support line or our twice-weekly Tech Bar drop-in hours.
Learning new technology not only builds confidence and independence in seniors — it gives them encouragement that it’s never too late to develop new skills and embrace new possibilities.
Staying Curious
Curiosity doesn’t retire — at Ginger Cove, it has the opportunity to flourish.
Every month, our Distinguished Lecture Series brings professors, environmentalists, artists, historians, authors and astronauts to our community. These engaging presentations encourage residents and Ginger Cove at Home members to broaden their perspectives, explore new ideas and deepen their understanding of topics ranging from politics to history, science, art, environmental preservation and global affairs.
Beyond our campus, Annapolis offers endless opportunities to visit art museums, attend concerts, plays, and performances and dive into local history and culture with like-minded friends.
Learning New Skills and Discovering New Passions
A growing body of research suggests that challenging the brain with new skills, ideas and experiences helps support brain health, build cognitive reserve and promote healthy aging. This may look like mastering a complex game, picking up a paintbrush or a crochet hook for the first time, learning new dance moves or studying a new language. Every new skill challenges the brain, builds confidence, and can contribute to lifelong cognitive health, while bringing joy and purpose to daily life. At Ginger Cove, residents and Ginger Cove at Home members are encouraged to continue pursuing lifelong interests and discovering new ones. They can express themselves in the art studio, join a creative writing group, learn how to quilt or learn a new game like Mah Jong. In addition to exercising the mind, these shared experiences also help seniors stay socially connected, which is essential for preserving memory and cognitive function.
Staying Active in Mind and Body
Research from Harvard Medical School suggests that exercise benefits not only the body —it also has a powerful impact on brain health. Aerobic activity triggers the release of brain growth factors, and physical activity — both aerobic and strength training — increases blood flow to the brain and reduces stress and inflammation. Together, these activities improve mood, memory, focus and processing speed, supporting cognitive function and potentially reducing the risk of dementia, particularly in older adults.
At Ginger Cove, residents and members of Ginger Cove at Home enjoy a wide variety of opportunities to stay active. Cardio classes, strength training, aqua aerobics, yoga and line dancing promote physical fitness and improve coordination and balance, while outdoor activities like croquet, pickleball, kayaking and nature walks combine movement with the restorative benefits of spending time in nature.
