Physical therapy is most often associated with recovering from an injury, surgery or illness, but there are many benefits of physical therapy for older adults that extend beyond recovery. Rather than waiting until mobility becomes limited, seniors can take an active role in maintaining independence, reducing fall risk, and managing pain and stiffness through physical therapy, helping them stay engaged in the life they want to live.
At Ginger Cove, we believe retirement is an opportunity to embrace the next chapter of life with purpose, energy, confidence and independence, and physical therapy can help to make that possible.
How Does Physical Therapy Support Active Aging in Annapolis?
Building Strength for Everyday Living
Strength plays an important role in maintaining mobility and independence. Building strong muscles can make everyday life easier, from standing up from a seated position, to climbing stairs, taking long walks and participating in activities like golf, croquet, pickleball or strolling through the charming streets of Annapolis.
Improving Balance and Reducing Fall Risk
Improving balance and coordination is critical for reducing fall risk. Physical therapists can identify deficits and create a targeted exercise plan to improve balance, coordination and body awareness for more confident mobility. They can also help individuals understand the factors that can impact balance in older adults, such as inner ear conditions, medications or other medical issues that can cause dizziness, so they can discuss them with their medical provider.
Maintaining Range of Motion and Flexibility
Stiffness and limited range of motion can make daily living more difficult. Simple tasks like lifting bags of groceries or laundry baskets, getting dressed, and cleaning can become challenging, and can put independence at risk. A personalized physical therapy program that incorporates stretching and therapeutic exercises can help increase range of motion and flexibility, allowing seniors to complete everyday tasks with greater ease and enjoy their favorite hobbies like improving their golf swing, painting, woodworking, or crocheting.
Reducing Pain for More Comfortable Movement
Pain associated with arthritis, injuries or other conditions can cause seniors to scale back on the activities they enjoy. But when pain limits movement, it can contribute to increased stiffness and discomfort, making it even more difficult to stay active. Through targeted exercises and movement strategies, physical therapy can help address factors that may contribute to pain, making mobility easier and allowing individuals to get back to living life without limitations.
Focusing on Your Individual Goals
One of the greatest benefits of physical therapy is that it can be tailored to individual goals, whether that means being able to keep up with the grandkids, continue pursuing the activities that fill you with joy and purpose, like volunteering or travel, or simply staying active with friends in the community.
Keep Moving Forward in Your Next Chapter
At Ginger Cove, our on-site physical therapy clinic offers personalized services to support recovery and mobility, while our innovative gaitACTIVE program offers a proactive approach to fall prevention.
