Every spring since 1983, the Annapolis Cup has brought together two storied Annapolis institutions — St. John’s College and the U.S. Naval Academy — for a friendly, but highly competitive croquet match. Over the years, the Annapolis Cup has grown into a beloved event, known for its spirited rivalry, colorful pageantry and the way it brings together generations across Annapolis.
A Community Rooted in Belonging
Ginger Cove opened its doors in 1988, just five years after the Annapolis Cup began, welcoming residents who wanted more than a place to live — they wanted a place to belong. Over the decades since then, Ginger Cove has become woven into the fabric of Annapolis life, and the Annapolis Cup is one of the many traditions that reflect that deep sense of connection, community and shared experiences.
Ginger Cove Becomes Part of the Tradition in the 1990s
Since 1992, Ginger Cove has proudly played a role in the Annapolis Cup tradition, hosting both the St. John’s College and Naval Academy croquet teams for matches against the Ginger Cove team on our campus. These matches have become a highlight, not only for the teams involved, but for our residents, and the local community. They provide an opportunity to celebrate the love of the game across generations, to create cherished memories, and to strengthen the bond between Ginger Cove residents and the Annapolis community. This sense of connection and belonging is something that defines life at Ginger Cove.
A Celebration of School Spirit and Tradition With a Playful Twist
The Annapolis Cup itself is steeped in tradition. From the formal challenge issued by the St. John’s College Johnnies to the Midshipmen at the pre-game lunch, to the opening music performed by the St. John’s Freshman Chorus and the Naval Academy Trident Brass band, the event is filled with moments that celebrate history, school spirit and camaraderie. The day of the game, the Midshipmen arrive in classic croquet whites, while the Johnnies surprise the crowd with a different uniform each year. These have ranged from kilts to tuxedoes and Viking costumes. Who knows what will be next?
A Legacy of Connection
As a proud sponsor of the Annapolis Cup, Ginger Cove is honored to help support this beloved and storied tradition. It reflects so much of what has defined our community since 1988 — a spirit of connection, engagement and a commitment to being an active part of Annapolis life.
For many, connection to a community like this doesn’t have to begin with a move. Today, Ginger Cove supports individuals both on campus and at home—offering different ways to stay engaged, connected, and supported as needs evolve.
The Annapolis Cup reminds us that traditions aren’t just about competition or ceremony — they’re about community and creating a sense of pride and belonging. At Ginger Cove, we’re proud to be part of a legacy that continues to bring people together—while also creating new opportunities for connection, engagement, and belonging today.
