If you’re local to Annapolis, you’ve no doubt heard of Pinkey’s West Street Liquors. Just blocks from the Naval Academy stadium, Pinkey’s attracts people from every cross-section of the community. What you may not know, however, is that Pinkey’s was, until recently, owned by Ginger Cove resident Admiral Malley.
Admiral Malley, USNA Class of ‘57, bought Pinkey’s for his family 40 years ago. Before it was acquired by the Malley family, it was a drug store with a soda counter. Now, four decades later, Pinkey’s has built a legacy of hometown customer service and community camaraderie.
Admiral Malley helped create a sanctuary in Germantown that brought people together. It is a glowing example of how small businesses can enrich the heart of a community. It is an institution of humanity in a world where we often forget that the real thing that makes a business great is the people. The Malley family not only provided a service to the customers who frequented it, but they also provided a lifeline to many people who needed a helping hand. Some employees thought their job at Pinkey’s would be temporary and stayed for over a decade. Others needed to catch a break and got so much more.
As Pinkey’s transitions to new owners, we’ll celebrate the years of memories that Admiral Malley and his family have helped create for Annapolis.
