Setting Wellness Goals for the New Year

We’re used to hearing the “new year, new you” messages every January. If you ask us, there’s no need to wait for a new year to set meaningful wellness goals for yourself. However, there is something about the possibilities of a new year stretching before us that makes January seem like a great time to reflect on the past year and set goals for yourself. At Ginger Cove, we believe in helping our residents live their best lives, no matter what that means to them. Whether you’re focused on physical fitness, emotional wellbeing or social connections, take the time to set intentional goals that will help you make the most of the year to come.

Tips for Setting Impactful Wellness Goals

  1. Be SMART – You may have heard of “SMART” goals. SMART stands for Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, Time-Bound. When you set a wellness goal for yourself, consider this criterion. Rather than saying, “I want to get healthier this year,” create a goal that is specific and realistic. A good example would be, “I will walk for 20 minutes, three times per week on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.”
  2. Align Goals with Your Interests – Perhaps you want to improve your emotional well-being, but you just don’t like meditation. There are many other ways you could improve your emotional well-being, such as spending time in nature or making time for activities with friends. Choose an activity that you will enjoy to ensure you’ll stick with it.
  3. Prioritize Balance – Because wellness isn’t one-dimensional, consider all aspects of your well-being: physical, emotional, social, intellectual, spiritual. Oftentimes, we focus on just the physical when it comes to well-being, but humans are much more complex than that. Make sure you’re building social connections, practicing mindfulness, or nurturing a spiritual practice to care for other parts of yourself.
  4. Celebrate! Even small wins are wins! Give yourself a pat on the back every time you reach a small goal. Every step forward is an accomplishment.
